How to get your advisory firm recommended by ChatGPT and AI search
When someone types "fee-only financial advisor for physicians in Seattle" into ChatGPT or Perplexity, you want your firm to appear in the response.
Getting there is different from ranking in Google Search. The signals are partly overlapping but not identical, and the playbook for AI search has some steps that traditional SEO does not.
This article covers how AI search systems identify and recommend financial advisors, what you can do to increase the likelihood of appearing, and how to measure whether it is working.
How AI search systems surface advisors
AI search systems like ChatGPT (with browsing or search), Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews do not use a ranking algorithm the way traditional search does. They use a combination of:
- Content from your website and other web pages
- Structured data (schema markup) that describes your firm to machines
- Third-party citations: NAPFA, CFP Board, state regulator databases, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, press coverage
- Reviews and testimonials from trusted sources
- The coherence and specificity of how your firm is described across sources
AI systems are building an understanding of who you are and what you do from many signals at once. Inconsistency confuses them. A site that says you work with "high-net-worth individuals" while your GBP says "retirement planning" and your LinkedIn says "all investors" does not form a clear picture.
Step 1: Establish a clear, specific entity description
Your firm has to be described the same way across all sources.
Write a one-paragraph description of your firm that covers: what you do, who you serve, where you are, and how you are different. This is not marketing copy. It is a factual entity description.
Example: "Meridian Planning is a fee-only RIA in Denver, Colorado serving physicians and medical professionals with $500K or more in investable assets. The firm specializes in tax planning, student loan strategy, and long-term financial planning for medical professionals in private practice and employed settings."
This description should appear, in some form, on your About page, your GBP description, your LinkedIn company page, and the bios of advisors on your team.
Step 2: Build authoritative citations in the right directories
AI systems use third-party sources to verify that your firm is real and to understand what it does.
The high-authority directories for financial advisors include:
- NAPFA member directory (for fee-only RIAs)
- CFP Board advisor search
- State securities regulator registrations (available via FINRA BrokerCheck or SEC IAPD)
- FINRA BrokerCheck (for BD-affiliated advisors)
- Google Business Profile
- XYPN member directory (for fee-only planners)
- Garrett Planning Network (for hourly planners)
- NAPFA's Advisor Directory
- Yelp, Google, and BBB
Your firm name, address, phone, and website URL must be identical across all of these. A difference as minor as "Suite 400" vs. "Ste. 400" creates inconsistency that reduces the confidence AI systems have in your firm's data.
Run a NAP (name, address, phone) audit before you start citation building. Fix inconsistencies before adding new listings.
Step 3: Add structured data to your website
Schema markup is code on your website that tells AI systems and search engines what your content is about.
For financial advisory firms, the relevant schema types are:
LocalBusiness / FinancialService: Describes your firm name, address, phone, hours, and service area.
Person: For each advisor, covers name, credentials, job title, and employer.
FAQPage: For pages with FAQ sections. Makes your Q&A content directly readable by AI.
BreadcrumbList: Tells AI systems how your pages are organized.
This is not visible to visitors. It lives in the <head> or body of your HTML as structured JSON-LD markup.
A Webflow site can add structured data through custom code embeds or a third-party SEO tool. WordPress sites use plugins like Rank Math or Yoast. If your platform does not support custom code, structured data is not possible.
Step 4: Create content that answers the specific questions AI surfaces
AI search systems recommend advisors who are associated with useful answers to specific questions.
The questions your ideal clients ask AI systems are predictable: "How do physicians pay off student loans while also saving for retirement?" "What is the difference between a fee-only and fee-based advisor?" "How do I find a financial advisor who understands equity compensation?"
These questions are also the articles you should be writing.
A library of 10 to 15 well-written articles on the specific problems your niche faces builds the association between your firm and the expertise AI systems surface in response to those queries.
The articles do not need to promote your firm. They need to be genuinely useful and specifically relevant to the niche you serve. The recommendation comes from the association between your content, your credentials, and the question asked.
Step 5: Earn mentions and coverage on authoritative sites
When a journalist at a financial planning publication quotes you, when NAPFA features you in a case study, or when a local newspaper covers your firm, those mentions become citations AI systems can read.
This is not about getting featured everywhere. Five high-authority mentions do more than 50 low-authority directory listings.
Target: financial planning publications (Financial Planning, Barron's Advisor, ThinkAdvisor), local business press, and industry organizations you belong to.
Getting covered is partly about having something worth covering: a genuine specialty, a published perspective on a niche issue, or a credential that is uncommon in your market.
Step 6: Collect and manage reviews
AI systems that incorporate review data favor firms with recent, specific, detailed reviews over firms with older or generic ones.
Google Business Profile reviews are currently the most influential. Yelp is secondary. Wealthbox and other CRM-integrated review tools that push to third-party directories are less consistent in how they are indexed.
A review that says "Tim helped me navigate the equity compensation decision when I was leaving Google and joining a startup" is more useful to AI systems than "Great advisor, highly recommend."
Specific reviews build the association between your firm and specific problems. Generic reviews do not.
What to measure
AI search visibility is harder to measure than traditional SEO because there is no equivalent to Google Search Console for AI.
Current measurement approaches:
- Manual checks: Enter the queries your ideal clients would use in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Record whether your firm appears and in what context. Do this monthly for the same set of 10 to 15 queries.
- Track direct traffic and referral traffic from AI sources. Perplexity sends some referral traffic that appears in GA4. ChatGPT does not reliably log referrals.
- Track GBP impressions and website clicks from GBP. GBP visibility is one of the signals AI systems use.
- Note any mentions or citations in AI responses. This requires manual observation.
There is no single dashboard that captures AI search visibility yet. The measurement approach will improve as the field matures.
The timeline
AI visibility is not a two-week project. The citation network, content library, and structured data need to be in place before the visibility accumulates.
Month 1 to 2: Entity description finalized, NAP audit completed, high-authority citations claimed or corrected, schema markup added to site.
Month 3 to 6: Content library of 10 to 15 niche-specific articles published. Review collection process started.
Month 6 to 12: First visibility in AI responses for specific queries. Manual checks showing firm appearing for 2 to 4 of the target queries.
Month 12 to 24: Consistent visibility for primary queries. Citation network mature enough to reinforce rather than require active maintenance.
The window for early positioning in AI search is still open. The advisors doing this work now will have an advantage over those who start two years from now when the patterns are more established and the competition is higher.
