Google Business Profile (GBP) is the profile that appears in the local map pack when someone searches for financial advisors near them. It is also what populates the knowledge panel on the right side of search results when someone searches your firm name directly.

A properly set up and maintained GBP profile is one of the most effective local visibility tools available, and it costs nothing.

This is a step-by-step guide to setting it up correctly.

Step 1: Claim or create your profile

Go to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account.

Search for your firm name. If a listing already exists, claim it by clicking "Own this business?" If no listing exists, create one.

If someone else has claimed your firm (common with multi-advisor firms or acquired practices), request ownership transfer. Google will notify the current owner and transfer ownership within 7 days if they do not respond.

Use a Google account connected to your firm's domain, not a personal Gmail. This makes it easier to transfer ownership in the future.

Step 2: Choose the right business categories

Primary category: This is the most important category field. Options for financial advisors include:

  • Financial planner (best for full-service planning firms)
  • Financial consultant
  • Investment service
  • Wealth management service
  • Retirement planner

Use the category that most precisely matches your primary service. "Financial planner" is appropriate for most RIAs.

Additional categories: Add up to 9 additional categories for any applicable secondary services. Common additions:

  • Investment service
  • Retirement planner
  • Tax consultant (if you offer tax planning)
  • Estate planning attorney (only if you are licensed as an attorney)

Do not add categories that do not apply. Google may verify category claims and adding irrelevant ones can trigger a review.

Step 3: Enter your business name correctly

Your GBP business name must match your legal firm name as registered with regulators and as it appears on your office signage.

Do not add keywords to your business name. "Smith Wealth Management - Fee-Only Financial Planner Phoenix AZ" is a violation of GBP guidelines. Your listing can be suspended for keyword stuffing in the name field.

Correct: "Smith Wealth Management" Incorrect: "Smith Wealth Management - Fee-Only Financial Planner"

Step 4: Enter your address

Enter your physical office address exactly as it appears on official documents. Include the suite number if applicable.

If you work from home and do not want your address public, you can hide the address and set a service area instead. This is appropriate for virtual-only advisors or those who see clients exclusively at clients' locations.

If you have a physical office where clients can visit, keep the address visible. It is required for appearing in the local map pack.

Step 5: Write a strong business description

The description field is 750 characters. Use most of it.

A strong description for an advisory firm includes:

  1. What type of firm you are (fee-only RIA, fee-based, hybrid)
  2. Who you serve specifically (niche or client type)
  3. Where you serve them (city or region)
  4. What you specialize in
  5. Any notable credentials or affiliations

Example: "Northbrook Financial Planning is a fee-only RIA serving technology employees and executives in the Austin area. We specialize in equity compensation planning, RSU tax strategies, and long-term financial planning for employees at public companies and pre-IPO startups. Our advisors hold CFP and CFA credentials and have combined experience of over 30 years advising technology professionals."

Avoid generic language like "comprehensive financial planning" and "personalized service." These phrases appear on thousands of GBP listings and do not differentiate you.

Step 6: Add your website, phone, and hours

Website: Link to your main homepage. If you have a location-specific landing page for your city, you can link there instead.

Phone: Use a number that you monitor actively. Missed calls from GBP clicks have a direct impact on conversion.

Hours: Set accurate business hours. Update them for holidays using the "Special hours" feature. Outdated hours listed on GBP undermine trust.

Step 7: Add attributes

GBP allows you to add attributes that describe your firm:

  • Online appointments: Yes (if you schedule calls virtually)
  • Identifies as veteran-owned, women-owned, or LGBTQ+-friendly (if applicable and if you want to highlight this)
  • Wheelchair accessible: Yes (if applicable)

Attributes appear in your profile and help Google match your listing to specific search queries.

Step 8: Add photos

Photos are a ranking signal and a conversion signal. Profiles with photos get meaningfully more clicks than profiles without.

Minimum photos to add at setup:

  • Logo: Your firm logo on a clean background
  • Cover photo: Your office exterior or a professional team photo
  • Office interior: 2 to 3 photos of your workspace
  • Team headshots: Professional headshots of each advisor
  • Team at work: Candid photos of team members in professional settings (conferences, client meetings if appropriate)

Google prefers photos that are at least 720 x 720 pixels. JPG or PNG formats are both accepted.

After setup, add new photos every 1 to 2 months. Regular photo updates signal an active profile.

Step 9: Enable and manage GBP Posts

GBP Posts are short content updates that appear on your profile. They have a 7-day lifespan (some types persist longer).

Post types:

  • What's new: General updates, articles, announcements
  • Offer: Promotions or offers (use rarely for advisory firms)
  • Event: Webinars, client events, educational workshops

Aim for 2 posts per month minimum. Posts can be brief: 100 to 200 words with a link to a relevant article on your site.

Posts serve two functions: they signal to Google that the profile is actively maintained, and they give visitors additional context about your firm's current work.

Step 10: Monitor and respond to the Q&A section

The Q&A section allows anyone, including the public, to ask questions about your firm. Anyone can also answer. This creates a potential compliance risk if incorrect answers appear.

Monitor the Q&A section weekly. Answer every question yourself to ensure accuracy. Pre-populate the Q&A with questions your ideal clients frequently ask: minimum portfolio size, fee structure, how you work with a specific type of client.

To add a Q&A yourself: open your GBP listing in Google Search, find the Q&A section, click "Ask a question," post the question, and then log in as the owner to answer it.

Step 11: Collect reviews compliantly

Google reviews are the most influential local ranking signal. They are also regulated under the SEC's 2022 Marketing Rule.

For RIAs: Reviews on a third-party platform like Google are generally treated as testimonials if you use or reference them in your marketing. Consult your compliance officer before featuring Google reviews on your website. The reviews on Google themselves are generally permissible to have.

A compliant approach for RIAs: ask satisfied clients to leave a Google review at a natural moment in the relationship. Do not offer incentives. Do not ask for reviews only from clients you know will leave positive feedback (this violates GBP guidelines).

Aim for 2 to 4 new reviews per quarter. Respond to every review, positive and negative, within 48 hours.

After setup: what to maintain

A GBP profile set up once and left alone will underperform a profile that is actively maintained.

Monthly maintenance:

  • Add 1 to 2 new photos
  • Post 2 GBP updates
  • Review and respond to any new questions in Q&A
  • Respond to any new reviews

Quarterly maintenance:

  • Verify all business information is still accurate
  • Update special hours for upcoming holidays
  • Review which categories are showing and whether they still match your services

Annual maintenance:

  • Review your business description and update if your positioning has changed
  • Add any new credentials, team members, or service offerings
  • Check NAP consistency against your website and primary directories

A fully maintained GBP profile for an advisory firm requires about 30 minutes per month. For a firm that generates clients from local search, that is a high-return use of time.
