What Content Gets Financial Advisors Cited in AI Answers?
Studies of millions of AI citations show which pages get quoted. Here is how to write advisor articles and service pages that AI tools pick up.
AI tools cite pages that answer one clear question near the top. They favor plain sentences with real names, numbers, and sources. Large studies of AI answers agree on this, and it holds for money topics too.
This guide covers what those studies found. It also shows how to use them on your own articles and service pages.
Put the answer near the top
AI tools read the top of a page far more than the bottom. Kevin Indig, an SEO researcher, studied about 1.2 million ChatGPT answers and the pages they cited. About 44% of the quotes came from the first third of a page. In a follow-up study, the last tenth of a page got only 2.4% to 4.4% of quotes. The AI tools skipped most conclusions.
On growth calls, we often see advisor articles that open with a long story. The real answer comes in the last section. That is the part an AI tool is least likely to read.
Write the other way around:
- Answer the question in the first two sentences of the page.
- Start each section with its main point, then explain it.
- Cut summary paragraphs that repeat what you already said.
Add facts, numbers, and sources
In 2024, a team from Princeton and other schools ran the GEO study. They tested which page changes make AI answers use a page. Three changes helped most: adding numbers, adding quotes, and citing trusted sources. Together they raised how often AI answers used a page by up to about 40%.
For an advisor, this means:
- Name the rule. Use its real name, such as "Roth conversion." Vague words like "some tax rules" tell an AI tool nothing.
- Give the number when there is one. Say where it comes from, such as the IRS.
- Link to the source. A link to an official page shows the AI tool and the reader that they can check the fact.
Check every number before you publish. Limits change every year. An old figure hurts trust with readers and with machines.
Write one page for one question
AI tools match questions to pages. A page that tries to cover everything matches nothing well.
Compare these two sentences:
- "We help clients plan for retirement."
- "We help federal employees decide when to start their FERS pension and how it fits with Social Security."
The second matches a question a real person would type into ChatGPT. It names the client, the decision, and the programs involved.
Good topics come from the questions prospects already ask on calls. Here are a few:
- How should a physician handle student loans after residency?
- What happens to my stock options if my startup is acquired?
- When should a federal employee start their FERS pension?
- How do business owners pay less tax when they sell the company?
Use the question itself, or close to it, as the page heading. Then answer it right away.
Keep key pages up to date
AI tools lean toward fresh content. Ahrefs looked at about 17 million AI citations. On average, the pages AI tools cited were about 26% newer than the pages that rank in regular Google results.
Review your key pages at least once a year. Update the facts, and show the date of the last real update. Changing the date without changing the page does not count.
Make the page easy for a machine to read
- Use real text. AI tools struggle to read words locked inside images, videos, or PDFs.
- Add a short FAQ section to service pages, with questions written the way clients ask them.
- Show who wrote it. Add the author's name and credentials, such as CFP®. It tells readers and machines that a qualified person stands behind the advice.
- Use tables for comparisons, such as fee structures or account types.
What does not help
- Shared article libraries. Some advisor platforms post the same article on hundreds of firm sites. Search engines show one copy and hide the rest. Yours is unlikely to be the one they show.
- Long introductions. They push your answer down the page, into the part AI tools skip.
- Repeating keywords. Writing "financial advisor in Denver" ten times does not make a page more useful to a reader or to an AI tool.
Before you publish anything, run it past your compliance review. Clear writing still has to avoid promises about returns. It also has to avoid claims you cannot back up.
This is one part of a larger plan. Our guide to AI search visibility for financial advisors covers the rest. Our research summary shows which advisors AI tools name today.
Tim is the founder of Finsites, the done-for-you online growth system for independent financial advisors and RIAs. He is also the founder of Pixels and Sense, a fintech product design agency, and has been a designer since 2001, working exclusively in financial technology since 2011.
He started Finsites because he believes independent financial advisors deserve websites that actually work. His approach is to build each one around the advisor's own story and personality, not a template, and to design it to bring in new business. He also makes sure every site is ready for the new era of AI search and gives the advisor full visibility of their marketing, so they always know what is bringing in clients.
